In the first place, it’s important not to re-invent the wheel. There are a number of resources/ideas in play in Scotland today. So, I’m trying to identify and review the “most important”. At the moment I’m reviewing the Sustainable Growth Commission and its 2018 report. It is a report that was commissioned by the First Minister and it is an attempt to make a case for an independent Scotland. I am not interested in the Party politics at this stage but am reviewing (all 350 or so pages) with a view to establish the quality of the ideas posited. I am mid way through the report, and will produce a summary blog soon, which will include an commented copy of the entire report as well as separate blogs on some of the more important areas. In addition I have identified the Common Weal site, a professional and content rich site which certainly has a number of ideas that should be discussed. Again this is a site which seeks Scottish Independence, and again I emphasise that this site is apolitical (in terms of Parties)- but is determined to give an ideas which make Scotland better a fair hearing. Finally, an important development must be noted – the seeping of MMT (Modern Monetary Theory) into the Scottish debate. This is now starting to be heavily promoted by some activist groups. MMT is likely to cause a major political split in the SNP, but we will be examining MMT as an economic theory and, more importantly, whether it has anything to contribute to making Scotland better. At this stage I’ll take any suggestions of other current sources of ideas, it seems unlikely that only Independence activists are making the running.
